Galaxy’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic won’t play in MLS All-Star Game

Galaxy’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic won’t play in MLS All-Star Game

ATLANTA — The MLS All-Star Game will feature one of the world’s most storied clubs.

Unfortunately for the more than 70,000 fans expected at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Cristiano Ronaldo is not along for the ride.

After Portugal’s elimination from the World Cup and his transfer from Real Madrid, the five-time FIFA Player of the Year took time off rather than accompany Juventus on its American preseason tour, which includes Wednesday night’s game against top players from Major League Soccer.

The decision will surely be a disappointment to the big crowd that had hoped Ronaldo would make his unofficial debut with Italy’s reigning Serie A champions while touring the United States.

Juventus acquired the 33-year-old from Real Madrid on July 10 in a deal the Serie A champion said was worth 112 million euros ($131.5 million) — the largest for a player older than 30.

Also sitting out the U.S. tour, which includes three other exhibitions, is Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain. He is coming off a scoreless World Cup in which he didn’t statty in the round of 16 loss to eventual champion France.

"Obviously these guys are world-class players," said Atlanta United’s Brad Guzan, a goalkeeper for the MLS team. "With or without them, it will be a difficult game. But their names alone bring a lot of attention. It’s a shame for everybody on the outside. For me, personally, hopefully it makes for an easier night."

Most players take three weeks off after the World Cup. Juventus opens its Serie A schedule at Chievo Verona from Aug. 18-20.

"We are sorry not to have the Ronaldo, and Higuain as well," Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said through a transator. "Unfortunately, they played in the World Cup. They needed some days to rest."

Ronaldo and Higuain won’t be the only big names missing from the game.

One of MLS’ top new stars, LA Galaxy forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, announced Monday that he’s skipping the All-Star match rather than make a cross-country trip to Atlanta. The 36-year-old Swede cited the grind of playing three matches in an eight-day span, including Sunday night’s 4-3 victory over Orlando City in which he scored his first MLS hat trick.

Ibrahimovic ranks second in MLS with 15 goals. He played with Juventus from 2004-06.

"I am disappointed to miss the 2018 All-Star game against Juventus, one of my former clubs," Ibrahimovic said in a statement. "I want to thank the fans for voting me to the team. My main focus is to score goals and help the LA Galaxy to the playoffs."

The Galaxy (10-7-5) are unbeaten in nine games and have climbed to third place in the Western Conference.

Per MLS rules, Ibrahimovic will also have to sit out LA’s next match Saturday against Colorado, one of the league’s worst teams.

New York City forward David Villa also will skip the All-Star Game after missing six matches with a knee injury. Ibrahimovic and Villa were replaced on the MLS roster by Minnesota forward Darwin Quintero and New York Red Bulls midfielder Tyler Adams.

Atlanta United coach Gerardo Martino, who will be guiding the MLS team, said the timing of the game does pose problems.

"In reality, I recognize it’s a little bit of a challenge for coaches who have players participating," Martino said through an interpreter. "Some players are coming from teams where they’ve played three games (in the last week). Some had a long trip to get here, like from Vancouver. I understand it’s a very beautiful spectacle for the league and the United States. But I think what we have to look at in the future is to have it at a different time, either before or after the season.

"We have to make sure the players arriving here in good condition are also returning to their teams in good condition."

But MLS is eager to show off its most compelling success story.

Atlanta shattered the MLS attendance record in its debut season, averaging 48,200 per game, and is on pace to break that mark this year at nearly 52,000 per game. The club already has the five biggest stand-alone crowds in MLS history — each more than 70,000 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The league expects another record crowd for its All-Star Game, breaking the mark of 70,728 in Houston for the 2010 match in which Manchester United defeated the MLS squad 5-2. An extra 1,500 tickets have been put on sale to meet the demand.

"It’s been fantastic to see the support that the city has given the club," Guzan said. "There’s not many cities around the world that have what we have here in Atlanta. I’m happy to have the opportunity to showcase this to everyone."

CARSON, Calif. — Zlatan Ibrahimovic had his first MLS hat trick, scoring the tying and go-ahead goals in a 4-minute span in the second in the LA Galaxy’s 4-3 victory over Orlando City on Sunday night.

The 36-year-old Swedish star tied it at 3 in the 67th minute on a diving header off Ola Kamara’s feed, then put the Galaxy in front in the 71st with a short hard kick after he headed down a rebound. He celebrated by ripping off his jersey.

Ibrahimovic has 15 goals this season, his first with LA.

The Galaxy (10-7-5) are unbeaten in nine games. Orlando City (7-14-1) has lost 12 of its last 13 games.

Ibrahimovic pulled LA even at 2 in the 47th with a leaping header off Giovani dos Santos’s feed.

After dos Santos rang a shot off the crossbar in the 50th, Dominic Dwyer put Orlando back in front in the 54th with a header off Mohamed El-Munir’s cross from the end line.

Orlando City took a 2-1 lead just before halftime on LA defender Michael Ciani’s own goal. Ciani accidentally deflected Sacha Kljestan’s centre pass past goalkeeper David Bingham.

Cristian Higuita opened the scoring for Orlando in the 18th minute, connecting from close range. Dos Santos tied it in the 39th, firing a shot to the lower left side off an assist from Ibrahimovic.

Bradley Wright-Phillips keeps it 💯.

The MLS star, who wears No. 99 with the New York Red Bulls, became the fastest player in league history to score 100 goals and he had a memorable celebration planned to honour the milestone Wednesday night.

Wright-Phillips scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over D.C. United and when the ball crossed the goal line he revealed a No. 100 jersey that he was wearing underneath his game kit.

Even with the World Cup fresh in our minds, this is one of the best soccer celebrations in recent memory.

The 33-year-old London, England native, who spent time with both Manchester City and Southampton early in his career, became the 11th player in MLS history to reach 100 career goals and it took him just 159 games to do it.

Rooney ‘delighted’ with win in debut, hopes for more game time

Rooney ‘delighted’ with win in debut, hopes for more game time

WASHINGTON — Even though Wayne Rooney wasn’t in from the start, the English national team’s all-time leading scorer was instrumental in finishing things off in D.C. United’s first true home game of the season.

Rooney made his Major League Soccer debut Saturday as a second-half substitute and assisted on the third goal in D.C. United’s 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in the first game played at Audi Field.

"Once Wayne came on I thought things really changed for the better," D.C. United coach Ben Olsen said.

Rooney, who entered the game in the 58th minute with D.C. United leading 1-0, provided the assist on Paul Arriola’s second goal of the game in the 80th minute with a simple square pass 30 yards from the goal.

Earlier Rooney was involved in the buildup to United’s second goal in the 69th minute, also from Arriola.

"It’s a big night — my debut in MLS, my debut for D.C. United and a win so I’m delighted," Rooney said.

The 32-year-old Rooney, who is also Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer, last played a competitive game on April 28 for his boyhood team Everton in the Premier League.

Rooney felt good after playing just a bit more than 30 minutes and hopes to increase his time on the field as he regains his form.

"Another tough week of training now and hopefully I can get a bit more game time next week," Rooney said.

Fans in the sellout crowd of 20,504 — many decked out in Rooney jerseys from his time in England as well as those wearing his new shirt with D.C. United — began chanting ‘We Want Rooney’ as he warmed up with the other substitutes in the 50th minute near United’s endline.

Eight minutes later the crowd went wild as Rooney checked in for Darren Mattocks.

After having two shots blocked in his first five minutes in the game, Rooney’s best chance to register a goal in his first MLS appearance came in the 79th minute but his near post header from eight yards out was saved by Whitecaps goalie Brian Rowe. Rooney again had a dangerous attempt in the 88th minute but his volley attempt went sailing over the crossbar.

Rooney, a veteran of three World Cups, said he went about his normal routine in despite the attention focused on his first game in MLS as well as the opening of D.C. United’s brand new stadium in Southwest Washington just a few blocks from Nationals Park.

"I’ve made a few debuts over my career and today was no different than the other ones," Rooney said before giving a detailed account of his pregame activities. "I got up, had breakfast, watched the England game in bed, went for a walk, had lunch, had a sleep, and got ready for the game so exactly the same as I would any other game."

NYCFC snaps Montreal Impact’s 4-game win streak

NEW YORK — The Montreal Impact‘s win streak has come to an end on the road.

Ronald Matarrita had a goal and an assist to lead New York City FC to a 3-0 victory over the Impact on Wednesday night, snapping Montreal’s run at four wins.

"We lost against a team that was better than us tonight, throughout the entire game," said Impact head coach Remi Garde.

Matarrita entered as a substitute in the 62nd minute. Three minutes later, his chip caught Montreal goalkeeper Evan Bush out of position and found its way to the side netting to make it 2-0.

Maturita assisted on Jonathan Lewis’ first MLS goal in the 76th minute, which was a header that glanced in off the right post.

In the middle of seven games in 22 days, the Impact had an altered lineup to start the match.

Canadian Shamit Shome started his first ever MLS game, while Michael Petrasso, Victor Cabrera, Raheem Edwards and Anthony Jackson-Hamel were all back in the starting 11.

"We tried to resist and to be a little heavier offensively in the second, but I think tonight, we had a little less of a repertoire to do what we’ve been doing in recent games," said Garde.

"I didn’t want us to lower our collective spirit, and I must say I wasn’t disappointed. The result was logical tonight, unfortunately for us."

Jesus Medina opened the scoring in the 60th minute with a left-footed smash from 20 yards out for NYCFC (11-4-4).

City remained unbeaten at home this season (9-0-1), with six of those wins coming via shutout. The Impact, which has been shut out seven times this season, dropped to 2-9-0 on the road and 8-12-0 overall.

Quintero powers Minnesota United past Toronto FC

MINNEAPOLIS — Toronto FC seemingly can’t stop teams from scoring against them in the first half.

Darwin Quintero scored three times for the first hat trick in Minnesota United FC history, helping the Loons beat Toronto FC 4-3 on Wednesday night. Quintero’s first goal of the night came eight minutes into the match and Miguel Ibarra also scored for United in the 13th minute.

TFC has conceded 10 goals in the first 15 minutes of games this season, worst in Major League Soccer.

"We give balls away that we shouldn’t, we can’t make plays to put fires, we’re a little bit deep in moments. I can’t put a finger on it," said Toronto FC captain Michael Bradley. "There’s a lot of different reasons. You can look at each goal and ultimately talk your way through it ten different times. The frustrating part is that in so many games, we haven’t given ourselves a chance.

"We start the game down 1-0, down 2-0 too many times. You have to be able to play from behind in moments, but we have had to do it way too often this year."

Minnesota United (6-1-10) snapped a three-game losing streak that included a 1-0 loss to FC Dallas on Friday at TCF Bank Stadium.

Quintero got his first goal eight minutes into the match, splitting two defenders and firing into upper left corner for a 1-0 lead. His second goal, in the 52nd minute, was just off the fingertips of Toronto FC keeper Clint Irwin and his third came just five minutes later, bending in a shot from the left side, over Irwin’s fingertips and into the upper right corner.

Justin Morrow, Sebastian Giovinco and Jordan Hamilton had Toronto FC’s goals. Hamilton got the Reds (4-3-10) within one with just a minute left in stoppage time.

Toronto FC has conceded 34 goals at the midway point of this season. They gave up 37 goals the whole of last season, when they won their first-ever MLS title.

Asked if his team could still make the playoffs despite sitting 10th in the Eastern Conference Bradley was terse.

"Absolutely."
